GTA 6 Graphics Card Guide: 8 GB vs 12 GB vs 16 GB Video Memory

How much graphics memory (VRAM) you need for GTA 6 at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, plus our recommended graphics cards.

GTA 6 Graphics Card & Memory Guide

In Grand Theft Auto VI, your graphics card memory (VRAM) is essential. It holds the game’s high-resolution textures, buildings, cars, and realistic lighting so the game runs smoothly without freezing or stuttering.

How Much Graphics Memory Do You Need?

  1. 8 GB Memory (Good for 1080p Gaming):

    • Popular Cards: Nvidia RTX 4060, RTX 3070, AMD RX 7600, RX 6600 XT.
    • What to Expect: Great for 1080p at Medium to High settings. If you try to play at 1440p with ray tracing on, 8 GB cards will run out of space, which can cause sudden frame rate drops.
  2. 12 GB Memory (The Recommended Sweet Spot):

    • Popular Cards: Nvidia RTX 4070, RTX 3080 (12GB), RTX 3060 (12GB), AMD RX 7700 XT, RX 6750 XT.
    • What to Expect: The ideal setup for 1440p gaming at High settings with realistic reflections turned on.
  3. 16 GB to 24 GB Memory (Built for 4K):

    • Popular Cards: Nvidia RTX 4080 / 4090, AMD RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 XT / XTX.
    • What to Expect: Delivers maximum 4K resolution, ultra-detailed textures, and full ray tracing with plenty of room to spare.

Ray Tracing and Memory

Turning on ray tracing creates realistic water and window reflections, but it uses extra graphics memory (around 1.5 GB to 3.5 GB). If your card only has 8 GB of memory, we recommend keeping ray tracing off so your game stays smooth.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, straightforward answers to the most popular questions about GTA 6 hardware and release dates.

Not yet. Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6 is launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S first. Rockstar hasn't released the official PC system requirements yet. Our specs are realistic estimates based on current console hardware, recent game releases, and the graphical leap shown in official trailers.

Yes. A fast Solid State Drive (NVMe SSD) will be a must for GTA 6. The massive open world, dense traffic, and highly detailed buildings need to load in real time while you drive or fly around. Old mechanical hard drives (HDDs) simply cannot keep up, which causes roads to vanish and buildings to pop in late.

8 GB of graphics card memory is the bare minimum for playing at 1080p. For sharp 1440p graphics or 4K with high textures, you will want 12 GB to 16 GB of memory. Playing on an 8 GB card at higher resolutions will likely cause stuttering and blurry textures.

Rockstar games usually focus on stunning visual detail and realistic physics first. We expect both standard consoles to target a locked, very steady 30 FPS Quality mode. If they offer a 60 FPS Performance mode, it will likely lower the rendering resolution to keep the action smooth.

The PS5 Pro has a faster graphics chip and Sony's new AI upscaling technology (PSSR). This extra power gives GTA 6 the best chance to run at a smooth 60 FPS with sharper 4K picture quality and realistic reflections.

Yes, GTA 6 will run on Xbox Series S. However, because the console is smaller and has less memory, expect lower resolution (around 900p to 1080p), reduced crowd density, and simplified lighting at 30 FPS.

Rockstar historically releases big games like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 on consoles first, bringing them to PC about a year to a year and a half later. With GTA 6 hitting consoles first, a PC release is expected later in 2026 or 2027.

The moment Rockstar publishes the official PC requirements, this website will immediately update with the official specs, and our compatibility checker will instantly switch over to match Rockstar's exact numbers.
